What is an Asset Tag? How do I assign an Asset Tag to an Asset?

The asset tag for each item is your company’s unique internal tracking identifier.

The recommendation is to choose numbers so that the sequence is easily serialized, and so that Tracmor can auto-generate* asset tag identifiers. Another option is to assign alphanumeric identifiers that you enter individually (or import).

You create a new asset tag identifier through the Asset tab by clicking on Create Asset. You can either enter an identifier into the Asset Tag field (numbers and letters only, no symbols), or you can check the box next to Auto Generate, which assigns the next available number.

To import a list of new asset tag identifiers:

  1. Create a .csv file with three columns: asset tag, location, and model.
  2. In list each asset tag identifier in the asset tag column, and for each asset tag, specify a location in the location column and a defined model in the model column. Important: Both of these basic attributes must be in Tracmor before an asset tag can be added to Tracmor. (Add new locations and models before importing, as needed.)
  3. Save the data in the .csv or .txt file format.
  4. Import the data set.
  5. Check the results by clicking on the Assets tab and viewing the assets.

*Set the minimum Asset tag number from the Admin tab. Depending on the number of assets you are tracking, it is advisable to set the minimum high, such as at 10,000 – which will allow serialization up to 99,999. Setting the minimum to 100,000 will allow serialization up to 999,999.
